Throughout the training year, we will have fun events and trips for the cadets. The following criteria is used to determine if a cadet is eligible:
- Attendance at mandatory training and support training activities
- Attendance at optional training
- Attendance at fundraising activities (not including bingos)
- Dress and deportment
- Cadet time in program (if necessary)
Some of the optional training includes:
Range/Marksmanship Team
Range is open and available to all cadets interested. We have specialists that work with our marksmanship team for competitions. Lt(N) Stewart is our marksmanship coach. In the past, we have had cadets qualify for provincials and nationals. Success requires dedication and eagerness to achieve the various marksmanship levels. Range training will teach the cadet proper handling, basic knowledge of the Daisy Air Rifle and the Anschutz small-bore biathlon rifle, and range safety. Safety is the upmost of importance throughout all training. The marksmanship team trains most Saturdays.
Biathlon
The biathlon program provides cadets with the opportunity to learn and compete in the combined sports of target shooting and running / skate skiing. Biathlon is a sport that offers a test of individual endurance as well as the disciplined art of rifle handling and skiing. Teamwork and leadership are an important part of this program.
The biathlon team trains on most Saturdays, focusing on aerobic and strength and on precision shooting. The physical training is to build upon an individual’s endurance and mental toughness. Range training will teach the cadet proper handling, basic knowledge of the Daisy Air Rifle and the Anschutz small-bore biathlon rifle, and range safety. Safety is the upmost of importance throughout all training. The Biathlon season takes place from September to March.
Sailing
In June of each year, cadets will be offered to participate in sailing at Blackstrap Cadet Nautical Site at Blackstrap Lake, just outside of Saskatoon. The Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) has developed a program called CANsail. The program encourages participants to make healthy lifestyle choices and friendly competition. The program has different levels and offers cadets a unique challenge. Once cadets have reached a CANsail level, they will be given a proficiency badge to be worn on their uniform.
Summer Training
Cadets can be selected for summer training for one to eight weeks on a variety of courses. Each training course offers a unique mixture of outdoor activities and valuable instruction. Attendance on cadet summer training courses is free of charge. Courses include leadership, instructional techniques, music, marksmanship, sailing, ceremonial drill, physical fitness, and ship’s boat operator. Advanced cadets can qualify for advanced sail or shipwright as well as international exchange trips and deployments to Canadian Coast Guard ships and Tall Ships (large sailing vessels).
Not every cadet is guaranteed a selection for summer training each year. There is a process and pre-requisites to be met when applying for summer training. First year cadets must have joined no later than January 31 of the training year, be in good standing at the Cadet Corps (good attendance, attitude, dress and deportment), be medically fit, and meet the course specific requirements. The process involves filling out an application form, and returning all necessary attachments by the deadline established. All applications are due by February 1. Late applications are accepted but may have a bearing on selections.
